The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

The new work explores locales from my past growing up in San Diego, living in Berkeley and my explorations traveling throughout California, particularly an investigation into the interplay of light, landscape, and weather patterns. The nuances formed from the ever-changing stages of the sun and moon set within the mood of the marine layer and coastal fog become the foundation for a visual language. Approaching abstraction with a distinct physicality, I pour and apply pigments directly onto fabrics. This immersive process embraces the physicality observed in nature. In comparison to the application of paint, I use bleach to strip away color, creating a stark contrast against areas of dense, layered paint applied with acrylics and inks. The result is a conversation between the materials, the techniques and the environment itself.
The fabrics include cotton, canvas, nylon and silver lamé and are as much a part of the artwork as the pigments. Stained or painted, these fabrics are cut into strips and reassembled, sometimes stitched together mimicking the kinetic energy of natural processes as well as the phenomena of the tectonic plates shifting below the ground. The paintings are often constructed from discontinuous bands of fabric, stitched and painted together creating a tactile surface that is both fragmented and cohesive in tension. The interaction between the tangible and the abstract captures the layers of experience that often go unnoticed, from the vast expanse of the sky above to the hidden world below.
