Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I feel the act of painting is just like making an exposure with a camera. It is an attempt to expose the flow of time itself by actually stopping the flow of time. I started taking pictures with a camera from a young age, and as someone who studied photography, paintings always appear like photographs to me.

I think that an artist's paintings are multiple exposures and  collages of the people they've met, the sights they've seen, and the feelings they've had, all of which are used to construct a single photograph. And I see these artworks as the truth captured with a shutter speed of 1/ a lifetime.

( In Japanese, photography is translated and written in Chinese character as "capturing the truth". )
