Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Corey Durbin is a multidisciplinary Artist from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, living and working in Brooklyn, NY. With influences ranging from the mystical writings of Brazilian novelist Clarice Lispector and experimental literature of Kathy Acker to the crass humor of the American animated comedy series Beavis and Butt-Head, Durbin creates anti-narrative works that embrace absurdity to dismantle established preconceptions of reality. Eschewing traditional narrative structures, Durbin’s compositions fluctuate between moments of resolved figuration, gestural abstraction, varied typography and raw materiality to present uncanny dreamscapes. The work takes a subversive approach to landscape and modern cultural mythology to meditate on structures of authority and power in relation to romantic notions of freedom and spirituality.
