Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

When fragmented materials begin to physically read as a single form—even one that appears porous or provisional—I find a rare sense of coherence that allows me to sit with chaos and ambiguity rather than grasp for concrete meaning. My attempts to defamiliarize material via textured assemblages allow me to physically hold together contradictory impulses: a desire for both flux and fixity, belonging and independence, and the tension between the evasion of and desire for identification. Collage supports my assemblage practice; it's an economical medium I use to construct images of hypothetical sculptures that are free from the physical limits of three-dimensional space.

I see these works as experiments in intensification. I’m interested in liberating common organic and mass-produced materials (or the images of them) from their utilitarian roles and, through assemblage and collage, putting them into a play of sensations that isolates life’s means and excesses. The parts that make up these works are never broken down past recognition, but through reconfiguration and the introduction of new material combinations, I can instead explore their sensory and performative potential.
