The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK
A vertical floor is a wall.
A wall with a hole is a door.
A door with a clear wall is a window.
We inhabit a world where space is often perceived as physical, defined by perpendicular structures like floors, walls, doors, and roofs. This is an attempt to quantify the familiar yet elusive concept of space for human convenience. However, our perception of space is counterintuitive when witnessed in photographs. Space requires specific visual comprehension while debunking any spatial functionality and utility. Here, One’s Door is Another’s Floor series explores the ontological value of space by challenging our inherent fascination with functional structures.
The works feature various dispositions of found objects and nature’s readymades, such as tree branches, snow, mirrors, and doors, restructured into tangible questionnaires. They propose how the embedded order and functionality of beings could be altered in a carefully staged environment. For instance, For Being a Tree (2021) visually recreates a tree consisting solely of discarded tree branches on the street. Although the individual branches intersect and are supported by strings to form an image of a tree, the resulting imitation is dysfunctional and futile as an individual life form. Here, all ephemeral sculptures found in the series are to exude pointlessness, assembled only to be dismantled. My photography serves as a blueprint of visual construction, lacking spatial utility but provoking the ubiquitous experience in our inhabitancy as a flat miniature.
