The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I am attracted to the lore of Frankenstein- an amour of the art of tearing down and rebuilding, refiguring flesh and ground, and questioning desire. The human body and our collective stories, lived and imagined, are a continued source of inspiration for my practice. My interest in narrative and cinematography has carried beyond my previous figurative work and into my abstract paintings. The dark and tumultuous years of a Trump presidency followed by a global pandemic were less welcome and more catastrophic dramas, though. I often thought of how the era of disco, 90’s raves, and dance parties and clubs in general, felt like a protest against societal and the government oppression. I questioned how I could bring that into the work and find solace and voice during a time of feeling powerless. What ensued in my studio were counteractions of fantasy, desire, and dismemberment through color, material, and compositional choices. 

In my recent series, biomorphic shapes emerge in highly saturated color devoid of their original narratives. Making them, I think about alien figures, body parts, and fringe characters happily living outside societal norms. They fill with colors like bright Cadmium Orange, Naphthol Red, and Quinacridone Opera (a pink that has the subtlety of a Liberace pantsuit). Like a skin, I pin the canvas directly to the wall. Many of these works are completed in a day, while others are made over a longer period of time. Their sizes range from around 14 x 20 to 54 x 60 inches, with both smaller and larger pieces being made concurrently. My process often includes tearing down the surface with the intention of building it up once again in layers. I deconstruct the paintings by scraping or sanding down areas. Occasionally, I use cold wax medium for the smaller oil paintings along with collage elements from previous canvases, glitter paper, and photos. The small and medium-sized canvases are completed once they are by nailed to wood panels, turning them into objects. The larger paintings remain unstretched.
