Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Influenced by my upbringing in the Dominican Republic, my art delves into dimensions of womanhood, exploring themes of autonomy, violence, and birth. To work on these narratives, I draw inspiration from Catholic religion, mythicism, and personal perspectives. I've been reflecting on my grandmother and her battle with Alzheimer's, which brings to mind memories of her regression from adult to child—mother to daughter—and prompts contemplation on the fluidity of these roles. Recalling how, during my teenage years, I assumed a maternal role for my 90-year-old grandmother, inspires an exploration of the intricate concept of motherhood independent from conventional childbearing. My work further delves into the intricate dynamics of the mother-child relationship, contemplating their potential coexistence within a single body. Interdisciplinary, my work challenges notions of selfhood and growth divorced from external influences. I explore these concepts through diverse mediums such as sculpture, installation, printmaking, and drawing.
