Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

These pieces are made using the process of frottage (rubbing) – absorbing a visual image of a handkerchief or lace doily from its pure physical form. Like photography or film, the rubbings develop over time as the recording is revealed.  In this mysteriously "blind" process, I am responding to what appears on the paper. But, it is not solely the surface texture that is recorded.  The resulting image is startling and unforeseeable.  It suggests a fluid state of time – the indefinable space between the present and the past and an enigmatic place between the physical and the “felt.” Combining aspects of drawing, printmaking and sculpture, the final piece is a new entity that is both tangible and vaporous.  While alluding to their original forms as intimate functional objects, these pieces have delicately crossed the boundary from object to subject.
