Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My work is process and materials-based. It explores the possibility of creating a language outside of words, where actions, intentions, gestures, and meandering create an image /form.

While working on drawing, ceramics or boxes I make a lot of decisions, jump from thought to thought, then pause to consider the form and possible meaning. The material I am working with combines with particulars of my process to create a presence that is recognizable.

As in tape/line drawings for example, I meander through the page with the tape and the pencil and will stop when I find the form. I like to think that a lot of work can be done by waiting and being alert to the specific opportunity presented by the materials.

The moment of recognition is much like passing by something that stirs a response in you.

I believe in created accidents and in my process do not like to stick to a preconceived plan.  I am interested in surprises and in keeping a record of passing impressions. In my selection of materials I tend to like those that are simple and familiar, that maybe already have a history of belonging.

When I work with boxes I like to start with the most ordinary packaging box and keep the box visible, do one thing to it and then follow up to see what object it will become after a sequence of interventions.

A big component of my process is to be open to what my materials might do. Making art is how I think and how I observe the world around me,learning to navigate the action and the meaningful waiting. Some of my pieces evolve over a period of time.
