Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK
MICHAEL E. KATZ
February 2, 2024
I have been making digital art for over two decades. My first digital painting was created on a Quantel Paintbox in 1988. This was seven years after using the Paintbox as a graphic designer and illustrator for NBC Television. Today, I combine my traditional drawing, painting, photography, and printmaking skills with my experience with digital media. Each unique digital work combines painting, photography, and printmaking.
I draw inspiration from my surroundings and my interest in Eastern philosophies. The nature of Buddhist koans fascinates me and continues to influence my thought process. I avoid including any text in or accompanying my digital paintings since I'm not interested in communicating a message or narrative in my work. I create a visual experience.
I work non-linearly, using many mutable layers and virtual oil paintbrush and palette knife strokes to develop the painting intuitively. The image on the display screen is a virtually wet oil painting with all the creative advantages it implies. Once completed, I make one unique monoprint of the image on canvas using archival pigment ink. Digital art allows me to experiment and innovate in ways not possible with traditional painting, photography, or printmaking processes.
