Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

RESUME

MICHAEL E. KATZ

July 2021

Michael Katz makes digital pictures that function simultaneously as paintings, photographs, and monoprints.
With incorporated painterly passages and photographic imagery, they operate as both objects and images. Beginning with his photographs of mundane environments, often consisting of construction and demolition sites, he paints the picture.

He has been a figurative painter for almost fifty years and has been painting digitally for over twenty years. He explores the seamless symbiotic relationship between digital photography and digital painting to make visual experiences never possible before. After receiving a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, he moved to New York in 1979 and worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for NBC Television. In 1982, Quantel, a U.K. company, created the Paintbox, a digital graphical workstation designed for artists. Quantel invited David Hockney and Richard Hamilton to experiment with the Paintbox. Unfortunately, it cost $250,000 in 1982, $1,000,000 today, far beyond any artist's budget. However, he had access to the Paintbox at NBC, and Quantel invited him to explore the creative potential of the Paintbox at their U.S.A. office in Connecticut, where he created "Scenic Overlook."

His work has been featured in exhibitions and collections, including the Drawing Center, New York; Touchstone Gallery, New York; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio; Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida; Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Westwood Art Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; Fort Lauderdale Museum of the Arts, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Miami Metropolitan Museum and Art Center Miami, Florida; and Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
