The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Artist Statement

My art is based upon observation. The act of painting is a way to process and interpret the complexities of life. I draw inspiration from my surroundings and personal journey, allowing my art to evolve as I do. I see this evolution in my body of work; my early pieces reflect different concerns and styles, while my more recent works incorporate new techniques and themes that arise from my ongoing growth and shifting perspectives. Each painting becomes a snapshot of the dialogue between me and my experiences

Through my art, I realize that I’m not just reflecting life; I’m actively shaping and influencing my understanding of it. Each piece I create becomes a conversation starter, inviting viewers to engage with the insights I’ve woven into the work. In this way, while both my life and my art are ever-changing, they reveal enduring truths about my identity and the human condition. My journey is continuous, marked by growth and transformation, yet anchored in the authenticity of who I am.

I grew up in Australia, surrounded by a blend of intellectual and artistic influences. My father, a political scientist and economist, and my mother, a pianist. When I was very young, my mother moved to London to further her musical career, taking my brother and me with her. One day, we visited the Tate Museum, where I wandered into the Turner room.  I was spellbound by the light emanating from the paintings. I had no idea who Turner was or what the paintings depicted, but it didn't matter; their warm light was enough. This experience ingrained in me the belief that art can evoke profound emotions, inspiring me to create paintings imbued with feeling and excitement.

I hold an MFA from the National Art School in Sydney, Australia. In 1979, I moved to New York to study at the New York Studio School. In 1986, I moved to Paris, where I now live with my wife, dividing our time between the French capital and the Greek island of Paros.
