Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

RESUME

Stephen McClymont (1952) received an MFA from the National Art School in Sydney, Australia. In 1979 he relocated to New York where he continued his studies at the New York Studio School. In 1987 the artist moved to Paris where he now resides dividing his time between the Greek island of Paros and Paris.

With a career spanning forty years, Stephen McClymont has developed a visual vocabulary that echos the tradition of Abstract Expressionism, a language that the artist began to study in earnest in the early 1980’s following his conversations with his mentor at the time in New York, Robert Motherwell and then later with other distinguished Abstract Expressionist painters, notably Joan Mitchell who was a close friend for several years. Dore Ashton, who supported and encourage the young artist during his formative years in New York, said, of his friendship with Mitchell, “You picked a tough one there!”. Indeed, she was a though ‘cookie’,  McClymont later confirmed adding, “For all the right reasons”.

Stephen McClymont’s art can be defined by its use of bold color translating ‘a brush stroke into a kind of rebus that tells of his response to what he calls the rhythms of nature’* bridging the fronters between abstraction and representation. The paintings are panoramas where line, different markings, color and form create suggestive sun filled landscapes. Collectively, McClymont’sart works are pictorial statements to the natural freedom of the creative act, spontaneity and a celebration of life,

Stephen McClymont lives in Paris, dividing his time between Paris and Greece.
