Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

M Slater’s work focuses on the intersections of photography, architecture, and language. Through an interdisciplinary practice, they wrestle with the stickiness between the words, spaces, and fictions we live between and move within — In particular, they are interested in the inseparability of architecture and body, containment and dispersal, fixity and movement, fantasy and reality.

In their work, language and the built environment come together as one intertwined, moving architecture. Within that architecture, the sentence and the photograph act as building blocks and offer portals between present and fantasy. Drawn to these portals, M tends towards the movement that occurs in moments of reading or looking through these openings, and the inner worlds they offer. At the core, their work cares for how this plays out in the city as well as the Trans body—two living and breathing sentences constantly in motion.
