Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My work is an exploration of the hues and textures of the ground beneath our feet and the human imprint on it. In my paintings I bring together geometry and abstraction, impulse and meditation, architecture and the natural world.

I make my own pigments using raw materials found in nature.  The mineral makeup of my surroundings and travels - abundant in resources and varying in composition – is an important element of my work. Flowers and plants in my backyard, clay and volcanic rock found while hiking - these materials have elemental hues and an inherent sculptural quality. They produce a weathered, textural palette while building an imperfect counterpoint to the clean lines and precision of form.

The genesis of form used in each of my paintings starts with the initial spark of a visualization meditation and is subsequently translated into geometric sketches. I then build asymmetrical, augmented canvases that accentuate the details of these sketches, and create a sculptural boundary for them to live in. To do this is to accept an omnipresent influence of geometry and intuitively find the painting in the process. Without any singular attachment to an outcome, my work can live on its own and embody natural and timeless qualities.
