Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK
I came to making paintings by way of sculpture, and as a result, I approach painting as a form of object-making. This particular series of works began with a discovery. While stretching a canvas, I realized that by attaching the canvas to the usually hidden stretcher bars, I could create a small indentation on the surface of the picture. This subtle yet significant alteration to the conventional materials and processes opened up a liminal space—between painting and sculpture, between the pictorial world of color, composition, and metaphor, and the physical space of real objects and viewers.
As I continued to explore this space, I became increasingly interested in the dynamic between the painted surface and the object carefully balanced on the ledge of the indentation. The rope functions as a temporal gesture, referencing painting’s long history of mark making while resisting its traditional associations with virtuosity and finality. These qualities are instead replaced with fragility, temporality, and what I think of as a sculptural presentness.
