Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Assemblage asks you to deeply see.  Ordinary objects looked past in daily life suddenly become potential studio materials, like shopping bags, rubber bands, bottle caps, coffee beans, newspapers, and Metrocards.  I cut, glue, splice, tear, align, and braid these objects, collaging them with traditional mediums like paint and pencil on paper.  Through these materials, I create portraits of people and places I call home.  The collaged object becomes indistinguishable from the painted trompe l'oeil, bringing disparate elements together into a spectacular "one".  These common objects are a kind of “connective tissue”: recognizable, mundane, ubiquitous integrations from the fabric of our lives.  They become meditations of potential transformation and careful attention, what Abigail Deville calls an “artifact” of a life lived.  They are part of our daily rituals, representing our interwoven lives and relationships.  These parts and portraits reveal the collective home that has shaped me (us).  Suddenly, nothing is disparate.
