Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My paintings reflect moments in my mind in which personal memories surface, both from the distant past and from my recent experience. I’m drawn to using a wide variety of marks across one composition and incorporating gestures most often understood as residual, such as paint drips. I also have an interest in removing the trace of my hand in the work retroactively. I work from photographs that I’ve usually taken myself, though the reference does not feel important – the photos are tools from which to derive imagery. I’m attracted to architecture, such as staircases and windows, and to plants, domesticated animals, and people. Recently, I’ve tried to fuse figures with the surrounding landscape, to render them only partially identifiable as humans. This is an impulse that is repeated across the whole composition with other shapes. Overall, I try to create a surface that seems to be oscillating between dimensions, complexifying the sense of pictorial space as well as the conceptual interpretation of the piece, i.e. what forms represent, or what their meaning is.
