Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

The thread that connects my paintings and works on paper is that they originate from a specific reference; a memory, a photo, or words, but are transformed by recollections, struggle, and the process of painting.

Sometimes my paintings assert themselves quickly but more often, they go through a good amount of uncertainty. I don’t abandon them, I step back and wait until they reveal my next move.

In my most recent work, I have mined photos that I found in a trunk that belonged to my great aunt, of a flood that took place in 1955 in the city of Tampico, where my father grew up.

Floods are a significant concern, especially in California, where I currently live.

I have collected rain since 2018 and consider it to be an important material in my paintings.

Paint, in conjunction with water, have the potential to create alchemy; embracing it, I make paintings that reference figuration and landscape.
