Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My recent paintings depict my body in relation to my daughter. The work is scaled to the size of an infant. The images are tightly cropped, focused on points of contact and the tiny spaces between cheeks and breasts.

Each painting starts with a drawing made from direct observation. To turn the image into a painting, I push the paint around, trying different combinations of color and shape until I recognize something: a touch, a feeling, an angle.

There are always people caring for babies, full of emotion, around the world throughout human history. Still, motherhood is often ignored or flattened into a static symbol. As a counterpoint, this work is vivid and physical, made with paint and a stiff brush, depicting light falling on my stomach and my child’s arm.
