Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I create figurative paintings based on conceptual ideas, often drawing from art historical references. Dutch painting and Chinese ink painting from the Song Dynasty are important sources. My works are meticulously detailed, requiring considerable time to achieve depth and intensity. It’s not about realism, but rather about making fiction appear believable, much like magic.

For me, the painting process resembles an alchemical transformation. My work embodies my fundamental aspirations for painting: to create art that develops slowly, allowing time for its possibilities to unfold. Moments from reality and everyday life, elements from art history, anecdotes, and mythologies intersect and react within my works. These components eventually condense into a visual surface that invites closer inspection and withstands in-depth scrutiny.

I want to reflect on painting in a figurative language, contemplating its role in art history and its relevance today. It's crucial to consider the purpose of painting in our contemporary context.
