Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I work conceptually and abstractly.  In my current practice I engaged in material & materiality, craft & an ongoing conversation with the minimal. I attempt through this to present a possible bridge between the formal and critical with sensitivity and empathy.

Beneath the formalism is a social meditation that includes my reflections on such issues as: ecology, climate, shelter, masculinity; boundaries, lines of demarcation, barriers, real property, racism, history, nostalgia, immigration, memory & time.

Material is not just a formal choice, it is also a critical choice for me too to use things that are commonly available or commodified.  The commercial ubiquitousness of them provides familiarity and an opportunity to highlight the economic system which brought it into being.

Craft and its role in art is topical but has been long an interest in my practice. For me, craft grounds the object or work in a human capacity. The seeing of the work of hand and the perfectly human imperfection is obvious.  This increasingly provides further opportunity to extend the hand to the labor and the laborer; to see work and labor as a human activity and to see those who labor in the light of day is the just opportunity.
