Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My recent work depicts industrial landscapes as memory constructions—clean, absurdly idealized spaces informed by an interest in both early to mid twentieth century postcard depictions of industry (aerial views of modernity's promise) and 18th century American and English folk paintings of landscapes with architecture. This new work began as a series of paintings on wood panels following a research trip to the northern Michigan mining town of Calumet, where my family worked in the early 20th century. Having been raised in the abject shadow of industrial failure, I am uninterested in sublime expressions, but wish to create quietly unheroic, psychically damaged environments that reflect various ironies through shifts in scale, humorous spatial arrangements, and the visualization of silence. I am striving for images of somber enormities rendered small and absurd.
