Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Jo Shane, a practicing artist in New York since attending The Whitney program in 1975, has been investigating both popular culture and social constructs in her sculpturally based work for the past 49 years.

Utilizing found, manipulated and personally archived objects she repurposes and recontextualizes her body of material in minimal and intuitive formats.

Early work debuted at Barbara Gladstone Gallery, White Columns, Artist’s Space, Grey Gallery and ICI. She assisted both Keith Sonnier and Jackie Winsor who remains an influence in her work. In 1989 Shane commenced a 24 year undergraduate teaching tenure at The School of Visual Arts.

Initially deconstructing new wave culture through a lens incorporating post-modern and mid century design, Shane  moved on to produce recognized work about the AIDS crisis. Challenging issues have continued to be central in her artistic production. Connecting with younger artists, curating and presenting in independent venues has also been a vital ongoing component of her practice.
