Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

“Face it Kim, we’re just peanuts to them,” my Uncle once said to my Mother. That was the jumpstart. A sentence equally weighted in stop and start, both soiled and solid. Naturally, emo afterthoughts of helplessness and rage bounced around, but plans for retribution landed with the biggest thump. Treatment like a peanut always happens but why? Why is the upper crust so lavishly slathered over the lower dough? Why am I a nut and they’re the thems? People talk around it, but I want to speak through it. Rock-hard resolutions are hard to come by, so I will continue my multi-layered and media-ed project that illustrates a vengeful framework of yucky color paintings and labored over totems which will hopefully fulfill my intentions of showing them to them so that sociopathology might sink in or stand out.

These scenes are where I flip the script and routinely take stock of my position. The power centers are not where I've been told they are, and there are no absolutes in this world or this work. But choosing to be a nut is all at once resilience, self-supplementation, and refusal of whatever it is that comes to disrupt each day. Those thems will squirm and try to feed me back to me in trumped-up schemes to discredit and decompose. But the methods for resistance have already been gifted to me in 2 am studio visits that stick to my ribs for months. And I pay attention because it pays it back. I am resolute in championing the power of the peanut, or at least the one living in my own shell. And that is what I keep working towards.
