Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

“I like making it, sometimes…” Luke said & when asked what he dislikes about art, he replied, “everything”. He hates making it, thinking about it, doing it, & yet it is unable to resist the urge & need to make art, that complex binary oppositions that many serious artists feel about making art, the irresistible victories & failures of each piece, the adventures of each piece, the “duende” of that desire, need, urge to make art & the frustrations of feeling defeat, unsatisfied. In this sense, Luke is an intelligent mature artist, irresistibly honest about the joys & frustrations of being an artist. Sometimes, making art isn’t always a choice, but a way of existing in this world. It is having a voice in it, a necessity of the human spirit— one of achievement & disappointment, success & failure, joy & sorrow, much like the entirety of human experience.

In describing his process, Luke uttered the words, “urge, action, expand, add”. His art is a form of thinking & emotional expression.
