Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Christine Buda’s artwork imbues sugary sweet imagery with a touch of uncertainty, as if the thread holding the fantasy together could, at any moment, come undone. Her drawings and watercolors depict mermaids, unicorns, clowns, flowers, and other honeyed images the way they appear in dreams – liquidy and barely legible to the waking eye.

Christine is a member of YAI Arts, a collective of artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities based in New York City. She typically begins a piece by finding an image that speaks to her in a book or online. Renoir clowns, unicorn stock images, and Van Gogh flower arrangements are expressed through Christine’s delicate and spontaneous linework. “Taking my time” and “using my imagination” are her guiding principles.

Her drawings live in the murky space between innocence and dissolution, dancing between our rosy reveries and more sinister memories.
