Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I am painting men, naked. I am working constantly, thinking about and trying out how to depict this subject of nakedness and men. I make my boundary. I  am painting male nakedness in an everyday way. It is something special...so few women do it... and ordinary because men are the other half of the world  who take off their clothes too. These paintings also represent a partnership. I am painting the other but a familiar other. It's manhood I have a closeness to and don't always like but also have loved deeply. What is decent, complicated, sexy, momentary, vulnerable, is what is.

I am painting the other. And wow, there is some freedom in doing that. I am not in that skin. Is it still okay? Yes. Right now I am obsessed and I am building my fantasy full of visual minutia and nonverbal commitment. How surprised can I be? How shy, stuck, thrilled do I feel about this figure? Who is looking? It feels like new territory. It is a hard sell, they say. I like being a piioneer.
