Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Statement

The sources of ritual art in so-called "primitive" cultures have always interested me. I lived in Argentina and Mexico for a number of years. My Latin American experiences continue to influence my work.

The trees in the woods behind my house in Brockport, New York are being taken over by the wild grapevines like kudzu in the Deep South. I collect vine and bark, harvesting it all year, to use in my sculptures and installations.

My work is made from mostly natural material. I use grapevine and bark to form, crochet, weave, coil & wrap three-dimensional pieces. I make imaginary, mythological beings. The pieces in my installations and individual pieces include fiber, grapevine, bark, wire and wax.

Like most artists, the concepts behind my work are personal.

As a group my installations become a single narrative with references to basketry, mask making, the figure, ritual, nature, metamorphosis, and the handmade object.
