Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

In her work, Wera Bet examines how (mis)information spreads and sprouts through concealed networks of knowledge. Her focus draws on sociological and aesthetic strategies that question the legitimacy of concepts that define social norms and normativity, leading to a criticism of these patterns as conservative, authoritative, exclusionary. She is interested, from a sociological point of view, in how human desires are shaped and learned rather than emerging through necessity and in the characteristics which determine individuality. She endows her paintings with an intensity that can be compared to the operation of a love song. Her love song puts the viewer in a special state of anticipation and vulnerability.
