Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK
Birgit Rathsmann creates projects in which hand-crafted objects mingle with readymade commercial products to foreground intimate experiences within larger social networks. They work through the ways in which sexuality, illness, fears and attachments are perceived and narrated across time by dominant culture, prompting opportunities for refreshed understandings and camaraderie.
The Evolution of Tetrapods, Flooded Basement Edition builds upon the artist's sustained engagement with the uneasy processes of navigating disease, stigma and shame by shifting from considerations of interpersonal transmission to something more parasitic.
Another way of saying that:
Around 390 million years ago, the first creatures in the oceans got restless, and put out feelers to life on land, beginning the evolution of tetrapods. Recently, when a basement I was living in, flooded, I imagined marine creatures moving in, and attempting a new tetrapod evolution using all the stuff in the basement.
And they all have something to say.
