Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. STATEMENT OF WORK
Ella Desmond’s interdisciplinary studio practice is deeply rooted in printed media with a particular interest in performance and role playing through the lens of female identity and the labor of emotion management. Desmond utilizes screen printing, relief, monoprinting, lithography, letterpress, bookbinding and papermaking in her printed practice. Each printed piece is made of many transparent layers, referencing and employing traditional printmaking techniques to subvert how a printed image is expected to behave. Figures become characters and are culled from art history, her memories, popular culture and are confronted with absurd language and fragmented social tension. Her work is informed by linguistic and sociological research and invents non-semantic or asemic language to examine assumptions of class and “correctness” in contemporary society. Ella Desmond’s work processes and acknowledges the toll from the labor of managing emotions, illustrating the moving in and out of the performance mode in everyday life.
