Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I make cat portraits because I am a devoted cat person. Something about cats is very interesting. They are independent, they are smart, they have a lot to do with history, especially the Ancient Egyptian era. They are strong and powerful.

For my portraits, I find inspiring images from movies, art, and history and replace the people in them with cats. I find inspiration at museums and on Instagram. Then I use Google to research for the best photos. I have made Egyptian cats, Victorian cats, Steampunk Cats, Tarot cats, Pirate cats, and many more. I like to make the pieces fun and humorous. I think it’s important to give a little humor in an art piece.

I feel like cats can sense what kind of person you are. It’s very interesting when you put your hand out and they start smelling you. They are royal. I like the fact that they have night vision, that they can see even better at night. I hope that people treat animals like animals and not like trash. I get disturbed when an animal is neglected.

I am also drawn to the darker things. It started all the way back in my first years of Junior High School. I used to go to Blockbuster with my mom and was always drawn to the monster section, looking at all the covers. A horror lover was born.

When I had a medical scare in June 2022, I was in my hospital room, and when I was sleeping I had a dream about being surrounded by all the ancient gods and goddesses of Egypt, telling me to be strong, that my journey as an artist was just beginning.

Spending time in my imaginary world makes me stronger and more powerful. I see fantasy things. I see creatures that you can never see in this world. When I make art in the human realm they cheer me on. They can’t wait for me to come back and tell them about it.

I am an artist with a disability. The disability part doesn’t interfere when it comes to me doing art. I do have some challenges that I have to face but I try to remain strong.

Life as an artist means me representing who I really am and showing what my passions are. It’s a dream I never knew would actually happen.
