Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My sculptures, installations, and drawings begin by applying pressure to objects and written language, cracking open their systems, and distending them into an expanded space. Putting ideas through the wringer, taking-apart-and-putting-back-together is my research and my practice. I address many subjects in my work: the gendered nature of politics and power, classical mythology and contemporary literature, tension between the haptic and the retinal, and the body’s visceral reaction to its environment. I incorporate visual puns and material onomatopoeias: line becomes edge becomes surface, traversing a borderline of two and three dimensions as a way to think through perception.

The processes I use in the studio pass images through states of being (for instance: from photograph to drawing, to sculpture, to painting) both furthering the distance from the original and leaving the physical trace of my hand. There is a search for the vestige’s origin that I’m interested in—that archaeological line we follow, hoping to find answers to write the history, to make the myth.
