Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

These paintings are fabricated artifacts. They are snapshots of the places I’ve lived or rooms I’ve spent a lot of time in. I use common building materials and tools such as joint compound, drywall, house paint and carpet to synthesize aberrations and marks or surfaces which are generic and ephemeral. The imagery is sourced from memory.  I stare at these marks so much they become as familiar as a street address or my own reflection. Like a smell, or a song, or anything so specifically sensuous it can transport you, they are commemorations that recall how I felt while inhabiting these spaces. The walls I copy are of someone else’s hand, and as they exist in reality, they’re made by men, but here are recreated by a woman. The process of learning how to build and practice trades not meant for me is as important as pondering how these anomalies came to be. I guess at the actions required to make them and retrace steps seeking to understand the experiences of those who construct and those who inhabit and the humanity that lies on each end.
