Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I recreate ancient armor and weapons from everyday materials of the modern world. My mission as an artist is to show people that with research and a little bit of ingenuity, you can make art with any material you have at your disposal.

I get materials of different kinds – things from the street, from different stores, and things that I have. I usually make a template of whatever I am making, then cut out the shapes in HD foam. Then I use a heat gun to bend the foam so it fits onto my arm, leg, head, or any part of my body. Then I start putting little accents and details to make it look authentic. And then I just paint. I try to replicate the era that I am researching, but the final piece always ends up with my own little twist on it.

My family ancestry is Spartan. Ever since I was little, I believed I had to be strong and willful. Visiting different eras gives me strength to do other things. I want people to understand that I am doing this work for my ancestry, and to understand that is a part of me.

I am an artist with PDD – Pervasive Developmental Disorder. With my disability, it does stop me from some day to day things, but when I am doing my art, nothing stops me. The world changes and I stay in that world of art. I think that anybody can be an artist, but there is a major sacrifice you have to make. The sacrifice is to commit to learning, researching, and trying to find your way. I want everyone to believe that they are capable of so much more than being normal.
