Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I paint as a means to dissect nostalgia and investigate the metamorphosis of memory, as our social climate progresses. Vernacular photography, snapshots, and family albums are the foundation of my work as it was once the method of recording memory - the physical records of the passing of time. I work with glass as it is a remnant of my own former photographic practice. Glass emulates emulsion providing a vehicle on which to make photographs and acts as its container, protecting the final print. The uniqueness of this substrate allows for unconventional approaches to painting. Methods such as the wiping away of paint, rendering subjects invisible, and their obscuration eludes to the diminishment of memory - a record of erasure. However these acts also highlight tragedy and falsehoods found in our past social narratives. As time progresses the value of these quotidian images change; I am attempting to define their contemporary significance.
