Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

In 2015, I went back to Colombia for the first time in twenty years and rediscoverd Pre-Columbian art, in particular work in gold. To pre-Columbian civilizations, gold was a sacred tool for transformation with symbolic rather than economic value.  With the arrival of the Spaniards, the history of gold quickly turned from magic to monstrous. I juxtapose the earthen quality of clay with the otherworldly power of gold to connect past and present, the ephemeral and the eternal, the sacred and the profane as I navigate the complex history of gold in Colombia.

My sculptures and installations, landscapes of body parts; breasts, hands, eyes, and mouths are sourced from found objects - a glove mold, silicone lips used for facial slimming exercises, and baking forms. These landscapes, inspired by magical realism, meditative and devotional, employ the power of myth and pay tribute to transformation.
