Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I start the drawings with scenes from a book I’m reading, and use that as a jumping-off point to improvise with abstract forms. My goal is to surprise myself.

I like how the different qualities of oil crayon, pen, and colored pencil work together. I can get a certain density with colored pencils. Oil crayons can smear in a painterly way or register a quick mark. Pens can make an outline or add an area of color that has a different texture.

I think the work is rooted in cartoons and comics mixed with building blocks. I try to channel those elements into formal abstraction. They are rooted in childhood but given extra flexibility with abstraction.
