Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

When I was ten years old, I helped bury a 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco behind my parents’ garage.

My father had two of these cars, exact copies down to the color, with one being stripped of its parts to keep the other running. I rode in one on long car trips to job sites and junkyards, and the other I helped tear down to its shell before ultimately leaving behind when the house sold.

A few years later and one town over, I stood in the driveway as a man who wanted to buy the surviving car looked it over. He repeatedly dipped two fingers into the coolant reservoir before sucking the antifreeze off of them; he said the taste would tell you the history of the vehicle better than the owner could.

A couple weeks after this, somebody else bought it. I wasn’t there for that.
