Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

For me, paintings are first and foremost things, beings even, not images. I’m drawn to painting’s ability to materialize the ephemeral and embody time in a still object. I aim to evoke the experience of a moment, rather than a narrative. In a time of social and digital media, the relationship between surface and depth, interior and exterior, subjectivity and objectivity is especially compelling to me.

In my process-driven paintings, I draw on an archive of personal snapshots, media photos, my sketchbooks, and art historical sources from Giotto to Paula Modersohn-Becker. Materially, I use drawing and painting media including graphite, acrylic gouache, and oil paints. I work both additively and subtractively, incorporating previous iterations in the final work to contrast illusion and material reality along with past and present. Through this process, I tap into sensory knowledge and build a visual history of the painting that in turn creates the image. Everything is in flux until it’s not. Themes of ephemerality, the circularity of time, and the complexity of vision are through-lines in the work.

Over the last year I've been drawn to painting flowers while I continue making paintings featuring girls and women. Now they've begun conversations with each other and I'm doing my best to listen.
