Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. STATEMENT OF WORK
My current practice is interested in the way the unconscious dreams and desires operate beneath the surface of our everyday lives. There are two interconnected strands of the practice that explore different layers of this interplay between the real world and the fantasy world of the psyche.
The first strand is an ongoing series of portraits inspired by a collection of publicity shots of Hollywood stars from the 1950s and 60s. I’ve focussed on the forgotten stars rather than the enduring icons as a way of accessing the hidden recesses of the collective unconscious. Rather than an attempt to represent a physical likeness the reference image is used as a jumping-off point, allowing the painting to develop intuitively to create more of a mood or atmosphere.
The second strand of paintings depicts familiar objects and moments that have a ritualistic or totemic quality and act as transitional moments between the physical world and the unconscious world of dreams and desire. These pieces are less expressively painted, the deadpan scenarios elicit their own atmospheric quality. There is a strong focus on materiality in these works, the tactile nature of fabric and the memories these evoke.
At its heart the work deals with the schism between romantic ideals and cynicism, between the innocence and darkness of our unconscious dreams and desires.
