Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. STATEMENT OF WORK
This series of oil paintings focuses on the female gaze as seen through a combination of bodies on display in public spaces such as museums, flea markets and street fairs and the material culture that surrounds them. The paintings reclaim the potential of the makers, mothers and muses in complex urban spaces.
The image making begins as a collage of fractured observations and associations found predominately in my street photography and social media. The process of collaging, reassembling and painting further exaggerates the body forms, disorienting color and off angeled cropping suggest a surreal and uncanny environment. Northern Renaissance, Pop Art and the female Surrealists influence the non-linear narratives.
The moment that is captured in the unguarded gaze of these composite women faces and gestures bear witness to thier strength and vulnerability. The layered images create a dialogue of power dynamics, body language, memory and cultural history.
