Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My work investigates American history and contemporary culture. My approach ranges from reverence to agitation, which is, in part, a response to my perceived lack of critical inquiry in American public discourse, which increasingly seeks to replace fact with belief.  Particularly in the contemporary era, events seem increasingly defined through ideological parameters.  In so much as my work posits a return to questioning in the Socratic sense, it is meant to interrogate our identity so that our values become reinforced through the process of critique.

Histories change as stories change.  Bearing that in mind, my work hinges on the increasing, however reluctant, acceptance that one's understanding of history, and even the veracity of history itself, is subjective. It is difficult to measure the integrity of the foundation on which we stand.  Fascinated by the manner in which colonial idioms, false dichotomies and constitutional references have been reinvented in the political present, my work exploits the stark nature of text presented both inside and outside of its original context, forcing viewers to question its meaning.  Language, both visual and written, is my primary tool.
