Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Dented metal tubes and torn fabrics form a tower bathed in green and purple light. A shimmering haze swirls upward from its base on a stone ridge. Where is this? It seems almost photographic, but the image is a construction, its magnified halftone dots and nostalgic palette sourced from bits of old books.

In my large-format inkjet prints, I work these scanned fragments like sculptural materials to build otherworldly scenes charged with a strong sense of the uncanny. Each element is precisely delineated, yet unsettlingly difficult to pin down. What is the purpose of the structures in these spaces? Did someone build them, or did they occur naturally? Is this our world, or another? Where is the vantage point, and what is the scale? How is this faithful to its sources, and how has it been manipulated? Fundamentally, what is true in these images?

By refusing to settle into the closure of recognition, these works allow a prolonged openness in the viewing experience. Through their indeterminacy, they become the setting for a search for understanding.
