Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My paintings are portraits without people. My subjects are there, but they aren’t there. Instead, a proxy is depicted, creating a mirror of the unknown person. These proxies are objects that people use, leave behind, and are consumed by. Recently, I’ve been focused on the car as a stand-in for the human figure. I'm interested in the traces of people left behind through the items they’ve held or inhabited. Often depicted in a state of disrepair, the car serves as a reminder of the body's fragility. It also offers comic relief, rendered cartoonishly; my cars are out of order and out of place, asking for the viewer's sympathy as they appear in various states of uncertainty.
