Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

As a self-taught artist, I create works by embracing the unpredictable nature of the creative process. My method involves working with found materials, such as magazine and newspaper supplements, and allowing each component to inform the next. The results are often informed by the process of working with the materials and unexpected surprises along the way. The techniques I use include tearing, sanding, cutting, and layering the found papers, resulting in compositions that often feature hints of representation.

My work is influenced by artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Winston Smith, Paul Klee, Raymond Pettibon, Jamie Reid, Mimmo Rotella, and Jacques Villeglé, who are known for their innovative approaches to collage and mixed media. I strive to create pieces that function as modern-day palimpsests, where the translucence of the paper layers and the hints of text suggest a deeper history. My work also features elements of graffiti paint-outs, repurposed signs, and jpeg compression artifacts, which serve to underscore the theme of unwanted or overlooked materials. The goal of my work is to celebrate the beauty that can be found in the discarded and to give new life to the forgotten.
