Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I am exploring ways to depict the struggle for fluency in a constant experience of code switching. My work focuses on nostalgia, displacement, and the shortcomings of language, presented through my experience of being raised with Chinese culture and socialized in American culture. I paint ping pong for this reason: to explore sense of belonging. The back-and-forth motion of a ping pong game can reflect the operations of code switching – wherein an individual moves between different languages, dialects, or vernaculars, while also moving between the languages’ respective cultures, values, and realities.
