Artist Registry
The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK
Historically, flowers have been associated with funeral mourning rituals and coded messages through floriography. My body of work, In Lieu of Flowers series, references social histories making them visible by reappropriating flower petals and recontextualizing their intended form through color fields. Specific species and colors were chosen for their meaning. The color field surface becomes the new subject.
I was inspired to create these works on paper in my studio practice from the past few years of loss and separation in our living history. Popular in Victorian times gifts of flowers were given as secret coded messages called floriography to express feelings that were forbidden in society. In lieu of flowers, I create color fields with flower petal stain as the medium in solid unbroken planes to focus on color and meaning as subject and object. What remains is a message of reconnection from the past to the present transitioning over time. What remains are permanent stains that transform over time mirroring changing ecologies, loss, fragility, and separation.
