Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I am an artist who paints from observation. Working in oils, I use a broad range of traditional painting techniques with a strong commitment to still life. This body of work draws from my childhood love of making dioramas for social studies and my background in sculpture. I set up scenes using porcelain figurines, household items and dried plants, paying attention to space, backdrop and lighting to give a sense of place, time of day and season.  The paintings of these ‘idealized landscapes’ represent what I imagine will stand in for nature, one hundred years (or less) in the future.  When the subject matter of traditional plein-aire painters becomes impacted by the significant loss of our natural world, these paintings hope to fulfill the great longing for our past reality.
